Our History

Harry’s Body & Fender Service commenced operation in 1944, founded by partners Harry Burrell and Buster Owenby. The picture to the right is of Harry (on the left) and Buster on opening day outside the shop. Harry’s was originally located at 164 Broadway in downtown Asheville in a rented building

whichoriginally housed horses and carriages for hire and later a taxi service. After a few years, Harry bought Buster’s interest and operated the business as a sole owner. For several years, Harry’s was the only independent body shop in Asheville, and it remains the oldest independent body shop in town.
In 1980, after working for Harry for several years, Bob Owenby (Buster’s son) and his wife, Margaret, bought the business from Harry, retaining the original name. Bob and Margaret continued to do business at the Broadway location, but Bob dreamed of having a building that was designed and intended for use as a body shop. In 1982, Bob and Margaret bought land off Patton Avenue in West Asheville, and Bob began building his dream, a 14,000 sq.ft. building with offices, parts storage, good heat and ventilation, a good compressed air system, good spray booths and other features that Bob had always wanted in a body shop.

The first day of operation at the current site was in1983. Two years later, Bob added two infrared curing, downdraft spray booths, and completed his dream. Bob and Margaret operated Harry’s Body & Fender Service at 15 Piney Park Road until August, 1997 when health problems forced Bob to sell the business to Jan Black, its first owner not in the Burrell or Owenby families.

Jan continues to operate the business under the name known by so many Ashevilleans, and to insist on maintenance of the high standards of quality and service set by the previous owners. He has added frame straightening and measuring equipment, a vehicle lift, computerized paint mixing, laser color matching, a high capacity air compressor/dryer and numerous other improvements.

In the end, the work produced by Harry’s is a testament to the high standards and work ethic of Harry’s employees. Their work cannot be “outsourced” to another country nor can it be short-cut and still maintain high quality. Harry’s continues to earn its great reputation , one job at a time. We recognize that you, the owners of the vehicles we repair, are our only customers, and that we must help you defend your right to have your car repaired properly, regardless of the interest some insurers may have in a cheap repair.
