My spyder 3 seems to give everything a sort of orangey pink tinge...

my background wallpaper is predominantly white, and the uncalibrated biew shows a pure white background and the calibrated view gives the white background a pinkish tinge..

Is the spyder doing this right? ive re-calibrated several times with the same results??

What monitor do you have? The Spyder 3 isn't great with wide gamut screens.

[edit]

what are your viewing conditions? Ambient light can have a powerful affect on your colour acuity. If I look at my screen early in the morning or evening when there's very warm sunlight outside, the screen looks visibly blue/green. It's not of course. It's just the ambient light altering my perceived white balance. This is why I never do any colour critical work at those times of day, and at night, will either have the lights off, or use my D65 balanced room lighting.

If the uncalibrated screen has a green cast however, it will look pink just after calibration.

If you have a wide gamut screen though, the Spyder3 can often make a complete dog's dinner out it.

When its measuring ambient light which way should I point the spyder? I.e the side you face into the screen should face which way?

Is it just because ive seen the original uncalibrated image which looked brighter white, and im comparing it to that?

Because i asked my partner who hasnt seen it uncalibrated and i asked her if it looked pure white or white with a pinky tinge and she described it as brilliant white like the paint Datacolor Spyder 3...Pink tinge? (5)

Maybe you're worrying about nothing then. If your partner, who hasn't seen it un-calibrated reckons it's white, then maybe it had a greenish cast prior to calibration.

Is the monitor old? LCD panels will acquire a tint to highlights when they age. My wife's Dell FPW2005 is showing signs of this now... in her case yellow.

I've got an acer led at work, from different viewing angles it gives a blue cast.

It's a LCD. It uses LED back lighting. LED back lighting is very cool... sometimes the calibrator will struggle to correct your white point if the LEDs are very cool, and if you also have a poor viewing angle, a red/pink tinge may result.

It's possible that you are seeing the uncalibrated as white, but in fact is has a cooler tinge that your eyesight isn't picking up.

Also, how long has the monitor been powered - it is best to check the calibration only when the monitor has been on for a while - at least 30 minutes. When I first turn my machine on and it loads the profile it looks like it is pink - but leave it a while and it is brilliant white.

I always leave the monitor on a good period before calibration. Maybe I should be disabling my screen saver etc for 30 mins before calibration too?

Funny it's fine for a lot of people.

It works just fine for many people - unless you can quantify your sweeping generalisation...

I had a spyder and it worked very well. I now have a colormunki and it's only better for 2 things. It's faster and profiles my printer. Regards monitor calibration accuracy, it's pretty similar.

Spyder 3 is known to give colour casts, especially the cheaper models (express especially). My Pro tinted blue. I returned 2 until I got a good one. Now use a colormunki which is much better since it profiles printers also. It's your mileage may vary with datacolor. I gave the Pro away to my nephew. 'munkis are spectrophotometer's while spyders are colorimeters... spectro's are more superior for calibration overall, however the software also plays a large part.

Look at the typo you're trying to pick up on again - the OP typed biew not blew. Have a look at the context too - it's pretty obvious (even at this time of the morning) that the typo is a simple one key slip of the finger and that he meant view.
While we're at it, what the heck is a Color Muni? A typo of Color Munki?

Quoted to show the relevant typo.

I've used the Spyder 2, 3 and 4, as well as X-Rite Monaco DTP94, X-Rite i1 Display and Display Pro, LaCie Blue Eye Pro, Pantone Huey and Colour Munky. I've borrowed them all from work just to see what's what. I've found no vast differences between them in terms of results. Some are measurably better than others, but visually they've all given broadly similar results. The only one that seemed crap was the Pantone Huey... which couldn't profile my screen very well at all.

I'm still suspecting that you're just not used to your calibrated screen, or it's an issue with the screen. Some monitors just don't software calibrate very well. You say it's a brand new 24", but what make and model?

If your eyes are used to seeing whiteon an uncalibrated monitor your view of white can be skewed meaning when calibrated your brain thinks it looks off as that's the way its trained.

funny since its the CM that has the cast problems - must be a fault with your monitor lol :|
