D'après une histoire vraie
Directed by Roman Polanski
Synopsis
Delphine is the author of an autobiographical novel that has become a bestseller. Exhausted by the promotional tour, just when she feels out of place, paralyzed by the idea of having to start writing again, she meets Elle, a young, attractive, intelligent, intuitive woman who seems to understand her better than anyone.

Review by Will Sloan ★★★★
I do think Roman Polanski should be in jail, but in the interest of full disclosure I should admit there's also part of me that thinks it's sorta neat that there are still new movies from the director of Knife in the Water. There's no point talking about Polanski if we're not willing to confess to some shameful feelings. To quote another problematic auteur, "The heart wants what it wants."
This one played at Cannes in 2017 and never surfaced legally over here, presumably for 2017-related reasons. It's every inch a Polanski movie: the confined spaces, the power-play duel between two characters, the reality-bending mystery plot. The critical consensus seems to be that this is one of Polanski's worst, but…

Olivier Assayas does Misery; I went in with low expectations and was entertained to an undeniable degree. Polanski seems to have figured out that trash people should stick to directing trash movies, even if his formal competency elevates said garbage to gilded, b-movie psychological pseudo-King garbage. Get ready for the most goat Eva Green jump scare ever, guys.

Review by Sara Clements ★★★
I've never seen myself represented on film more than when Delphine, starring at a blank word doc, sighed loudly while pulling her hands away from her keyboard.
Based on a True Story marks my favourite actress's return to French cinema. It took Eva Green 13 years to find a French script that she liked, and it's unfortunate that it would later turn out to be directed by Roman Polanski.
I've found that most of the French films I've seen in recent years have their strengths based in the characters. And this film certainly is an interesting character study. The dynamic between Delphine (Emmanuelle Seigner) and Elle (Eva Green) is intriguing and complex, reminding me somewhat of Phantom Thread where one…

Who'd have thought that listening to Eva Green pronounce "Googler" in her native French would be the highlight of this somewhat mediocre day.

I don't get the hate! Based on a true story might be a little predictable and not the most innovative film out there but there is still a lot to like. Two very good lead performances, a great score by Alexandre Desplat, a fun script and proficient direction. I am a sucker for well crafted pulpy psychological thrillers so this was definitely up my alley.
Sadly, I suspect that the harsh critical judgement has more to do with the director than with anything actually in the film... -

An extremely clever film that makes you think you know where it is headed, only to surprise you multiple times. Polanski's direction is masterful, he makes what is essentially two women speaking in two different houses for two hours truly captivating and entertaining.
The film looks like a thriller about an obsessive fan, but it isn't. It looks like a film about a writer who receives unsigned letters threatening her, but it isn't. It looks like a seduction story with lesbian undertones, but it isn't. Then it becomes a real pleasure to discover what this film actually is. Benefits greatly from Eva Green's performance and Desplat's wonderful score. -
Review by Filipe Furtado ★★
Polanski playing with the kind of power play two-handler he'd worked with before but this one is both trashier (good) and tired (bad). Not much energy I'm afraid. Eva Green is fun as always. Givig Assayas involvement on the writing makes for a curious double bill with Non Fiction.
